Dear Tom,
I can attest that in the last 30 or 40 years our springs have been colder than they were in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. What are the stats?
—Sam Solomon, Deerfield
Dear Sam,
Let’s define spring as March, April and May. Using Midway Airport temperatures, spring in the 1940s through 1960s (30-year period) averaged 48.6 degrees; the spring of 1991 to 2021 (again, 30 years) averaged 50.5 degrees. Although spring temperatures in any given year rise and fall a few degrees above the long-term average, springs in 1940-1969 were generally cooler than in 1991-2021. Similarly, the spring for the 40-year period 1930-1969 averaged 48.4 degrees, while the springtime period 1981-2021 equated to an average of 50.3 degrees. Our memories can sometimes deceive us.
