His long wait is over: we’re going back to Pandora.

The teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water premiered on Monday, giving fans a new look at the characters of Jake Sully, Neytiri and more.

James Cameron’s original blockbuster, Avatar, was released in 2009 and broke records as the most expensive film ever made, grossing $300 million.

Shot in 3D with motion capture technology, it pushes the boundaries of what cinema can do.

This is clearly an ambition that remains for director James Cameron, who told audiences the same thing about the sequel during the first viewing of the trailer at Cinema Con in Las Vegas.

While the trailer was initially limited to running in front of the screens of the Marvel Doctor Strange movie in Madness’s Multiverse, it’s now available to everyone (though not in 3D: that still only available in cinemas).

While it doesn’t give a lot of plot clues, it does show stunning clips from around the planet Pandora, including Jake Sully and Neytiri (played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana) as they explore the world. world and the creatures in it.

At the end of the clip, Jake says: “I know one thing. Wherever we go, this family is our fortress.”

The film’s synopsis is also quite vague, saying: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family ( Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the troubles that follow them, the distances they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure . “

So far, it’s been a mystery. And despite the long wait between films – thirteen years and more – Avatar 3 ended filming in 2017, a few months after season two.

With a total of four sequels in production, producer Jon Landau confirmed that the films work alone, but “together are a more wonderfully connected epic story”.

Although audiences still have to wait until the movie’s release date, audiences will also get to see the first Avatar movie, which will be released back into cinemas on September 23.

Avatar: The Way of Water opens in US cinemas on December 16.
