Ben Williams secures a spot in the England team

Staffordshire triple jumper Ben Williams is celebrating after being named in England’s squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
He will win gold at the Birmingham Games the first weekend of August after securing his spot with a 16.82 meter jump earlier this month – the fourth-best of his career. . His most recent international appearance came after he represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
Today, British triple jump champion Ben, who has been sponsored by mining giant JCB since 2019, said: “I am truly delighted to represent England at my hometown Commonwealth Games. our home. I’m feeling great and excited at the prospect of playing in front of a crowd at home. I enjoy the atmosphere of the big competitions, and this is one of the biggest tournaments in the world. ”
Ben, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, was inspired to start jumping three times at the age of eight while watching Jonathan Edwards on TV win a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. Edwards still holds the world triple jump record of 18.29 metres, 27 years after setting it.
Ben missed the last Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 due to knee surgery and, after returning to training, almost quit the sport in 2019 as he battled for balance. The need to make money with the need to train like an elite athlete.
Ben said: “If JCB hadn’t been involved to help with the sponsorship, I doubt I would have been able to continue to represent my country in the sport I love. “Thanks to that support from JCB, I was able to train full time as a triple jumper, which has helped me stay in top form. I entered the Commonwealth Games as a medal contender, which is a great position to be in. ”
Ben’s best jump of his life of 17.27 meters was in August 2019 – roughly the length of a double-decker bus. Guyana member Troy Doris won a gold medal at the last Commonwealth Games with a jump of 16.88 metres.
