Dominic West has reflected on the “deeply emotional” conversation he had with Dame Maggie Smith on the set of the new Downton Abbey.

“I said: ‘The theater too?’ and she said, ‘No, I don’t do theater either, and this will be my last job.’ And that was incredibly emotional.”

West revealed that he was present in the last scene of Smith she filmed on the show and said he thought he was “witnessing history”.

“It was very emotional,” he continued. “And I talked to her later in the make-up trailer, and it was so touching that this amazing, wonderful actress is no longer acting.
