Celebrities, including authors, actors and politicians, have reacted to Ghislaine Maxwell’s 20-year prison sentence for child sex trafficking.

The social networking site was found guilty on December 29 by a federal jury of five counts, including sex trafficking to recruit and groom four girls between 1994 and 2004 for having sex with her. her ex-boyfriend and “accomplice” Jeffrey Epstein.

In delivering her sentence in Manhattan Federal Court on Tuesday (June 28), Judge Alison Nathan called Maxwell’s behavior “cruel and cannibalistic” and rejected the assertion that she could not pay the fine.

Many celebrities celebrated the news on Twitter. However, some argue that 20 years is not nearly a harsh enough punishment.

Piers Morgan wrote: “Who are Ghislaine Maxwell’s rich, powerful & (sometimes) famous clients? We should be told. It’s not just her & Epstein that participated in this criminal sex act. We need names”.

A shackled Maxwell was joined in court by members of her family as well as some of her victims, who made impact statements before the sentence was read.

Maxwell also spoke in court, saying meeting Epstein was “the biggest regret of my life” and told victims: “I hope my sentence and harsh detention will bring you relief. peace and at last.”

In addition to 20 years in prison, Ghislaine was also fined $750,000 (£615,000). Federal prosecutors asked for a sentence of 30-55 years for Maxwell, while her defense asked for no more than five and a half years.
