Former England pacer Steven Finn hopes that England will do well in the upcoming Test series against India. He gave special advice to the team and it was to win over the Indian crowd to strengthen their chances of winning the series.
England squad for the Test series
England will land on Indian soil on Sunday, January 21 to complete their 12-year quest to win the Test series here. The Ben Stokes-led team will begin the five-match Test series against India, starting from January 25 in Hyderabad. This will be a litmus test for the team, who have not been able to get past the movers in India.
Finn, who was part of England’s series-winning team in 2012, feels that the team will need to attract the Indian crowd. He also calculated that with familiar IPL names like Stokes, Joe Root, Mark Wood and Jonny Bairstow in the squad, the team should look to use their popularity to the team’s advantage.
“I think the IPL superstardom of some players will benefit England,” Finn said. “Kevin Pietersen aside, that 2012 team, people weren’t really superstars in India, whereas this time you have quite a few guys coming through who played in the IPL and were superstars in that tournament. I think that would be worth it,” Finn told ESPN Cricinfo.
Finn recalled the memorable victories he played in for England during their away tour and mentioned winning the hearts of the crowd as a key factor in the team’s victory. He also pointed out that with McCullum and Stokes, two of the IPL stalwarts at the helm will help England.
“The three most memorable tours I’ve been on, India 2012, Australia 2010-11 and South Africa 2016, all three, one of the driving forces for us was to try to convince the public to standing up for them and turning them against their own team. . That’s a huge benefit for you, and having Stokes and McCullum at the helm gives England the opportunity to do that, ” Finn said.
England will go to India with renewed hopes as McCullum has since been appointed head coach of the Test team, which is yet to lose a series. England beat Pakistan 3-0 and drew Ashes 2023 against Australia with the much talked about Bazball approach.
