India vs England LIVE: Cricket score and updates after Ollie Pope’s stunning 148 lifts visitors into the lead

2023 Sports Review

Ollie Pope rescued England from danger and put them ahead with an unbeaten 148 as the visitors showed real fighting spirit for the first time in the opening Test match in Hyderabad.

Early in the day, Joe Root hit two in two balls as England quickly claimed the remaining three overs after India had started the day on 421 for seven.

Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley gave England a typically Bazball start, scoring comfortably and they went into the lunch break at 89 to one.

However, India then had their best spell of the day, first Duckett out for a big run, then Root trapped by Bumrah. Jonny Bairstow then attempted a spin, and skipper Ben Stokes was bowled by Ashwin, with Pope resolute at the other end.

Pope formed a remarkable 100-plus partnership with wicket-keeper Ben Foakes, who made 34 before one ball was just low, but it was the number three batsman who deserved all the credit Kudos for an exceptional innings in difficult conditions.

England were dealt a blow just before the first Test when Harry Brook returned home for personal reasons, although they will be delighted by the news that Virat Kohli has also been ruled out of the first two Tests because personal reasons.

Ollie Pope’s ‘phenomenal’ century ‘masterclass’ hands vital lifeline to England in first Test against India

Here is the match report of the day:

Root finished by looking forward to tomorrow: “We have to keep playing the way we play.

“I think one of the great things about Pope’s innings was recognizing certain passages of play. I thought he maneuvered the field brilliantly.

“There was a period where it reversed and I thought he managed it well and that’s overlooked by this team, being able to withstand pressure in certain situations and knowing when to put pressure on the opposition and is a great example of how to do that under extraordinary conditions.”

Root: England 316-6

Root continued: “This series has been a long work and there will be a lot of ups and downs and things going in a lot of different ways, so have that early on in the tour and there’s a lot of nice to remember.

“I think that’s a really important part for us and it’s nice to be in this position after where we were yesterday.

“But I think it says a lot about the mentality of this group and the way we play our cricket now.

“We never felt out of the game and we always found a way to put ourselves in a winning position and then keep trying to win and now we’ve tried to move towards that goal, it’s just about following through on that tomorrow.”

Root: England 316-6

With the ball in hand, Root posed a threat with the ball, and when asked about his fours, he said: “It was a great (pitch) to keep bowling on.

“For a part-timer like me to pick up four wickets there must be something there.

“I think more than anything I’m pleased with this morning and how we got things done as a group.

“It’s more about how we’ve been and how we want to go about things and trying to find ways to gain an advantage. I think everything we did today was great to have us in not only for the rest of this game but for the rest of the series.”

Root: England 316-6

On Pope’s stunning 148, Root said: “But the way Pope has played in particular, is an absolute class in terms of scoring in this part of the world.

“When you’re not used to playing here over and over again and you’re just taking the odd tour here and there to be able to make the right decisions consistently, under pressure, in times Important points in big matches and after everything. that he went through, coming back from a serious injury and being sidelined for a long time…

“Being the vice-captain to stand up and play an innings like that was truly phenomenal. We are all very happy for him.

“We know what a good player he is and to score a point like that early in the game and get us back into the game, it was fantastic and we’re excited for him.”

Root: England 316-6

Joe Root spoke to Eoin Morgan on the world feed at the end of the match: “It was a great day of cricket for England.

“The way we played and went from the start, I thought we handled the ball very accurately and made it very difficult for them to take advantage of what they did yesterday and then the opening position to help them. I started – it can be tough if you lose a few early goals but they have been very good for us over the last few years, getting us off to a brilliant start.

“And then some of the partnerships then had to get out during a difficult period when it was reversing, some of us weren’t able to manage that.”

Root: England 316-6

Take a bow to Ollie Pope. He got England out of trouble and put them in the lead.

The number three surrounded him, including the experienced trio of Root, Bairstow and Stokes, but along with his Surrey teammate Foakes, the pair labored to put England ahead.

Pope made an inconsistent start, but accelerated after his century, to end the day 150 short.

Stumps: England 316-6 – leading by 126 runs: Pope 148*, Rehan 16*

Final of the day and Ashwin will bowl it out.

He pulled the ball outside the boundary, a rare move by the experienced spinner, and the England teenager converted to double figures.

Pope would have no chance of reaching 150 and he would be undefeated at 148.
