Virender Sehwag’s cheeky dig as chef to accompany England cricket team for India tour in 5-match Test series

New Delhi,UPDATED: Jan 6, 2024 20:00 IST

Former India international Virender Sehwag, who is famous for his witty post-retirement comments, recently sarcastically criticized the England cricket team after it was reported that the away team brought their own chef to India.

England will tour India for a five-match Test series, starting from January 25. According to reports, the team will bring along their country’s football club, chef Omar Meziane of Manchester United. The team is sending a personal chef on board as a precautionary measure to prevent players from getting sick. It will be a 7-week tour and the management wants to be cautious about the nutrition of their players.

Sehwag retweeted England’s fan base, Barmy Army’s tweet about the news, and he reacted sarcastically and said: “Request made after Cook left. Will not catch forced in IPL.”

Even former Indian cricket commentator Aakash Chopra criticized the team and said: “Good idea. I’m sure majority of England players must have also invited their chefs for the IPL, this past year another year. As if.”

The move, as reported by The Telegraph, is not because of trust issues with Indian hotels but because of the players and their aversion to spicy food.

The Telegraph reported: “England insisted they had nothing to do with the lack of confidence in providing clean facilities to hotels but were instead about ensuring players, especially those from refuse to eat spicy food, are eating nutritious meals instead of filling up on energy bars and pizza.” .

The Test series will begin in Hyderabad followed by matches in Vishakhapatnam, Rajkot and Ranchi and the final Test will be played in Dharamsala.

England’s last win in a Test series in India dates back to 2012. In the 2021 series, England won the opening Test in Chennai but lost the next 3 Test matches against India Degree. The England cricket team was also criticized for arriving in India just three days before the series starting on January 25.
