Johnny Depp timeline: Actor’s career and what has he done since Depp vs Heard as documentary airs on Channel 4

Johnny Depp has spent most of his life appearing in public.

Actor who first became famous with The movie 21 street jumps in 1987, before turning to a successful career in Hollywood in films like But the pirate of the Caribbean, Donnie Brasco And Fear and disgust in Las Vegas.

However, in recent years, Depp has been embroiled in a number of controversies. Last year, he had a public battle in court with his ex-wife Amber Heard over his allegations that she defamed him. Heard, an actor best known for his role in the DC Comics film adaptation aquatic, Defendant Depp domestic violence in his testimony in the trial. Depp denied the allegations.

The jury finally ruled in Depp’s favor on June 2, 2022. The trial and the former couple’s relationship are being explored in the new Channel 4 documentary Depp vs. Heardairs on Sunday, May 21.

After the trial, Depp was seen performing on stage with musician Jeff Beck for several days of touring. At the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Depp launched his first film project since the challenge: a French-language TV series Jeanne du Barry.

The actor broke down in tears after receiving a seven-minute standing ovation at the premiere. Jeanne du Barry received mixed reviews from critics, with independenceby Geoffrey MacNab awarded the film four stars.

Heard’s supporters opposed the inclusion of Depp at the festival. Speaking at a press conference, Depp announced that he is being “ostracized” by Hollywood after the trial.

Before the legal battle, Depp was best known for playing Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean Franchising.

He is also known for starring in films including Edward Scissors, Charlie and the Charlie Chocolate Factory, Lone Ranger And Rum’s Diary.

Depp also played the villain, Gellert Grindelwald, in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts. However, he left the franchise at the end of 2020 and was replaced in the third season (Dumbledore’s Secret) by Mads Mikkelsen.

In the course of Depp v Heard Depp tells of his childhood and turbulent relationship with his parents.

Depp was born in Owensburg, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963, the youngest of four children. His parents were Betty Sue Wells, a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer.

During his childhood, Depp’s family moved often, after which the actor told Oprah Winfrey that he moved “probably 40 times” before he was 15.

“My mom likes to move around a lot,” he said. “Once we moved from one house to the next.”

When Depp was about 7 years old, the family moved to South Florida.

Depp has described the lifestyle as “kind of normal” for him and his siblings, adding: “we don’t know anything else.”

In 1997, he recalled Hello! magazine that when he was 12, his parents were “always fighting” and that he had “almost no contact with the outside world”.

“As soon as I got my guitar, I locked myself in my room every day after school and did nothing but play until I fell asleep,” he said.

In 1978, when Depp was 15 years old, his parents divorced. Betty Sue remarried to a man named Robert Palmer, whom Depp later described as America today as a “really cool guy” who has been “in prison for almost half his life”.

Depp left California in 1983 to pursue a career in music, eventually turning to acting on the advice of a young Nicolas Cage.

During the ongoing legal battle with Amber Heard, Depp has spoken out about his childhood, alleging that he and his siblings suffered abuse at the hands of his mother.

“[Depp’s mother] capable of being as cruel as anyone,” he said, noting that this also affected his siblings and father. She is quite violent and she is quite ruthless.

Describing her mother’s violent behavior, Depp said “an ashtray” could be “thrown at you”, and claimed she would hit her children on the head and sometimes use “high heels or electrics” phone or whatever comes in handy”.

The actor said the family was shocked and his siblings would instinctively shield themselves when their mother passed by because they “didn’t know what was going to happen”.

Meanwhile, he describes his father as “kind”, “shy” and “stoic”. The court also alleges that Depp’s father once hit him with a belt on his mother’s orders.

After Depp’s father left the family, his mother fell into a “deep, dark depression”, according to Depp’s statement, the actor claiming she had survived a suicide attempt while he was still at adolescence.

Betty Sue Palmer passed away in 2016 after a long illness.

The first episode of Depp vs. Heard airs at 9pm on Sunday, May 21 on Channel 4.
