Pau Torres’ representatives will travel to Manchester this week to negotiate a contract with United – on condition that an agreement can be signed with Villarreal for a fee, reports in Spain claim. The 25-year-old has been available this summer due to the La Liga club’s financial difficulties, despite reaching the Champions League final.

Unai Emery has seen his side’s league form suffer due to their stellar European performance, although UEFA Conference League spot was secured on the final day of the season.

Even so, Villarreal’s biggest stars – including Torres and Arnaut Danjuma – would ideally want to play in the Champions League and could now move on.

According to the local newspaper of Villarreal Mediterranean Newspaper SportsTorres is one of the most sought-after players and is valued at just £45 million.

United are among those interested and it is also claimed that the defender’s agent Tarraga and Fores will be ready to travel to Manchester as early as this week for contract negotiations.

Ten Hag, who spoke to the media for the first time on Monday, was full of praise for current captain Maguire – although he will still have to prove his worth under the new manager.

“I have to reiterate that next season is another season but I think he has done very well,” said the Dutchman.

“He’s a great player, he’s also achieved a lot [with his] Donate to Manchester United. So I’m looking forward to working with him. “

Torres will provide healthy competition for England international and £40m signing Raphael Varane, who has had a rough first season on English shores.

Ajax defender Jurrien Timber is also said to be interested in United in talks over a deal to buy the former Ten Hag player.

The player’s agent teased that the move to United could be closed as he posted a picture of an airport on Instagram with the caption: “Deal closing time.”

United are expected to work on the transfer window in the coming months and will bring back Ten Hag with a substantial budget.

With up to five players set to leave, there are a number of gaps in United’s squad that need to be filled without even taking into account the need for more quality.
