“Gilbert is very sweet. Really kind, a legend,” Schumer, the Oscar co-host, said in a post on her Instagram story.
Hollywood star Mark Hamill shared his tribute to the late comedian on Instagram.
“He is a unique voice in comedy on many levels. Unpredictable, one-of-a-kind, fun and irreplaceable! the Star Wars actor wrote.
“Thanks for a life of laughter, sir.”
Oscar-winner Matlin recalls the times the pair met, including when Gottfried “played a prank” on her.
“I am deeply saddened to read about the passing of Gilbert Gottfried. Funny, not politically correct but an inner softness,” she said, posting a photo of them together.
“We have met many times; he even pranked me on the plane, replacing my @655jack interpreter (they’re like twins).
“Sending love to Dara and his children.”
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane tweeted: “Gilbert Gottfried made me laugh so hard that day on set, I could barely do my job.
“A completely original manga, and an equally kind and humble guy behind the scenes. He will be ignored.”
US actor Mel Brooks tweeted: “So sorry to hear that Gilbert Gottfried has passed away.
“What a funny, funny guy. It’s unique. He will be missed a lot. ”
News of Gottfried’s passing was announced on his social media page.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness,” the post said.
“In addition to being the most iconic vocalist in comedy, Gilbert is also a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children.
“Although today is a sad day for all of us, let’s laugh as loud as we can to honor Gilbert.”
The comedian died of recurrent ventricular tachycardia caused by type II muscular dystrophy, a disorder that affects the heart, journalist and longtime friend Glenn Schwartz said in a statement.
