Melanie Lynskey mourns ‘heartbreaking’ loss of friendship with Kate Winslet

Melanie Lynskey compared losing contact with Kate Winslet to the breakup in a recent podcast appearance.

The two actors – currently 45 and 47 respectively – co-star in Peter Jackson’s psychological thriller heavenly creature in 1994 when they were teenagers.

It was their feature film debut and they played two friends whose relationship culminated in the murder of one of their mothers.

Appears on Mixed joys and sorrows podcast on Thursday (April 20), Lynskey said: “When I lost touch with Kate, it was more heartbreaking than any breakup I’ve ever been through.”

The yellow jacket the star continued: “It was painful and nothing seemed to happen, it was just that she became a huge, international movie star and she didn’t have much time and then, all of a sudden, she’ll be in Los Angeles and don’t have time.”

Winslet continues to star in Ang Lee’s Sensation and sensitivity in 1995 before entering the stratosphere with James Cameron’s Titanic in 1997.

Lynskey admits that people naturally drift apart but “it hurts for me”.

In a 2012 interview with TIME, Lynskey explained that she and Winslet shared a “very intense” relationship and “couldn’t leave it,” adding: “We would write to each other and talk on the phone all the time. We have been in regular contact for a long time.

Flashing back to the film in a 2020 interview, Winslet recalled being sexually harassed by a male crew member during a nude scene with Lynskey.

“One of the boys filming – as we were getting ready for a scene, and we were both wearing small panties, nothing from the waist up – I heard him from the side say to another said, ‘Well, I guess it’s hard. -Damn day, boys,’” she said.

“I really don’t know a girl who hasn’t experienced some level of harassment of that degree. Even if they are just words, they are very powerful. It’s like bullying.”

The actor emphasized that, despite that incident, heavenly creature is her “most precious cinematic experience”.

Lynskey is currently starring in yellow jacket season two, with episodes released weekly on Paramount+.
