Talking to GuardMurphy said he was “strictly instructed” not to discuss any specific details about the film’s plot, but did reveal details of the chemical tests in the film between himself, Pugh and Emily Blunt, who plays Kitty, Oppenheimer’s wife.
“They put two actors in one room to see if there were any sparks, and had all the producers and directors sit on the table watching,” he recalls. “I don’t know what yardstick they use, and it seems so silly, but sometimes you get a chemical reaction and nobody knows why.”
The report also added that Murphy and Pugh had “extended full nudity” scenes together, and that made Oppenheimer one of the rare Nolan films to deal with a significant interest in sex and relationships.
Fans theorized that Nolan would enter the field in June, when it was revealed that Oppenheimer received the filmmaker’s first “R” rating in the US since his 2002 film Insomnia.
The R rating is roughly equivalent to “15” in the UK, although the age rating for any film varies at the discretion of each country’s rating agency. Meanwhile, PG-13 is considered more or less equivalent to “12A” in the UK.
Oppenheimer received an R rating for “some sex, nudity and language”, while in the UK it received a certificate of 15 for “obscene and sexual language”.
The film remains one of this summer’s most hyped blockbusters, with Nolan teasing last month that it has left early viewers “devastated”.

Like Murphy, Pugh and Blunt, Oppenheimer features a large cast that includes Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Rami Malek, Gary Oldman, Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, Matthew Modine, Casey Affleck, Alden Ehrenreich and Jason Clarke.

Blunt this week revealed that the cast bonded together while filming the movie in the New Mexico desert in 2022, but Murphy declined to join the cast’s group dinner.
