Ray Liotta’s cause of death was revealed almost a year after he passed away in May 2022 at the age of 67.
Actor best known for starring in Martin Scorsese’s classic 1990 crime drama best friendfilming a new movie, Dangerous watersin the Dominican Republic when he died in his sleep.
Officials have now announced that Liotta’s cause of death was heart and respiratory problems.
According to documents obtained by TMZHis death was classified as natural and non-violent, specifically as respiratory failure due to pulmonary edema – fluid in the lungs and acute heart failure.
The documents also said he suffered from atherosclerosis, which John Hopkins Medicine describes as a thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by a buildup of plaque in the inner lining of the arteries.
His film career spanned five decades. As well as his acclaimed turn in best friendLiotta also enjoyed popular performances in movies including Earth Cup And Field of dreams.
In recent years, he has gained popularity again, appearing in projects like soprano voice prequel Many Saints of Newark – in which he played two roles – and the movie Noah Baumbach Marriage Story.

Following news of his death, several celebrities paid tribute to Liotta, including Robert De Niro, who said he was “deeply saddened to hear of Ray’s passing”.
“He is too young to leave us. May he rest in peace, Taxi driver stars are added.
Jennifer Lopez, who co-starred with Liotta in the TV series Shades of bluecalling him her “accomplice” in her messages about him.

“The first thing that comes to my mind is how good he is to my kids,” the actor and singer wrote on Twitter. “Ray is the epitome of someone who is tough but is very sentimental on the inside… I guess that’s what makes him such an attractive actor to watch.”
Liotta is survived by his daughter, Karsen. Before his death, he was engaged to Jacy Nittolo.
