For many people, the heat and longer days of summer make them suddenly want to escape the city, even for a day or a weekend. Well, the good news for Londoners is that there are plenty of charming villages less than an hour away.
One such settlement is Englefield Green in Surrey. Surrounded by beautiful woods and other greenery and just 40 minutes by train from London Waterloo, this pretty village is also very pretty and very convenient to get to. And while you may not have heard of it, it was recently named one of the most beautiful places to live in the UK.
The title was awarded by The Sunday Times, who included sleepy Englefield Green on its 2022 Best Places to Live list alongside Surrey’s co-star Farnham thanks to the leafy surroundings and great amenities. As SurreyLive Reportedly, residents of the attractive settlement continue to echo this sentiment, praising the friendly community, great schools and general ‘village feel’.

The area’s abundance of pubs and restaurants also earns much praise, as does its many green spaces. In fact, as well as a spacious green village within the village, you’ll also find Windsor Great Park, a 2,000-hectare woodland with deer park, flower garden opened by the Queen (Savill Garden) and more nearby.
Flanking Englefield Green on its other side is splendid Runnymede, a beautiful water meadow run by the National Trust, where the Magna Carta was signed. Meanwhile, sites of interest in the village itself include the Air Force Memorial and beautiful St Jude’s church.
And current residents aren’t alone in thinking Englefield Green is a charming place. Famous American actress Marilyn Monroe stayed here from July to November 1956 while in England filming ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ with British actor Sir Laurence Olivier.
Not much is known about the ex-monitor siren’s extended visit to Surrey, however, she is known to have stayed in Parkside House, a spacious country estate next to Windsor Great Park. Marilyn had joined her husband, American playwright Arthur Miller, on a four-month vacation, and the trip was part of their honeymoon. So if you are thinking of a romantic stay here, you are in good company.
You may not be able to stay at Parkside House, however, and you’ll find plenty of great alternatives near Englefield Green on Booking.com. For example, if you’re looking for somewhere also along the spacious Windsor Great Park, there’s also Fairmont Windsor Park Hotel. Also, for something more important, there’s also apartment for rent and pub room.
For wine and dinner places, Hive, Mow . Barley and The happiness man just a few of the well-reviewed pubs you can easily find a drink or a snack. The restaurant used to be particularly popular with visitors for its delicious food – including fish and chips, burgers and roast dinners – as well as its friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. picturesque roof and beer garden.
How to get there
One of the perks of Englefield Green is the convenience of traveling from London. A quick train from London Waterloo can get you to nearby Egham station in 37 minutes, no change. Then it’s just a five-minute drive – or under 30 minutes if you want to walk – to your destination village.
