Dear Tom,

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1, but it appears that hurricanes have formed earlier in recent years. Is that the case?

Phil Patrice

Dear Phil,

You’re right. The first named tropical storm in the Atlantic basin occurred before June 1, in each of the past seven seasons, since 2015. Last year Tropical Cyclone Ana formed on May 22. 5 and in 2020 Tropical Storm Arthur formed on May 16. In 2017, Tropical Cyclone Arlene developed on April 19 and, in an extremely rare event, Hurricane Alex developed on April 12. January 2016. The last season with the first hurricane after June 1 was in 2014 when Hurricane Arthur was named on July 1. As Hurricane 2022 is underway, the first four hurricanes will be placed. named Alex, Bonnie, Colin, and Danielle. Preliminary forecasts suggest another active hurricane season.
