UK flooding latest – Hundreds of warnings across England as heavy rain sparks travel chaos

Storm Henk: Heavy rain leads to flooding across England and Wales

Hundreds of flood warnings are in place across the UK after torrential rains, leading to rescue missions across the country and traffic chaos.

The Environment Agency has issued 305 flood warnings across England and 50 people were evacuated from Hackney Wick, London last night after a canal burst its banks.

South Western Railway services were disrupted across its entire network, with major problems on western England routes.

The operator said: “While we expect water levels to fall and most of the network to reopen today, South Western Railway will be unable to operate services between Yeovil Junction and Exeter due to landslides near Crewkerne.

“Disruption to the rest of the network is expected to last throughout today as trains and crews are displaced.”

A London party boat that was originally a floating bar, restaurant and nightclub sank in the River Thames amid heavy rain.

Elsewhere, a major incident was declared yesterday in Nottinghamshire as people were evacuated amid flash flooding caused by Storm Henk.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said water levels would continue to rise over the next 12 hours.

Flood impacts will continue to be ‘significant’ following the rain

The impact of surface water and river flooding will continue to be “significant” across parts of England following heavy rainfall, experts have warned.

A major incident was declared amid widespread flooding in the Midlands on Thursday.

According to forecasters, showers will continue into Friday morning and are likely to affect parts of south-west and east England, Wales as well as areas in Scotland.

Stefan Laeger, of the Environment Agency, said: “Significant impacts of river and surface water flooding are possible across parts of the Midlands, south and east of England on Thursday and Friday due to locally heavy rainfall falling on already very saturated catchments.

“Minor ongoing impacts are also possible across England over the next five days as some rivers gradually respond to recent and forecast rain.”

The highest rainfall total recorded on Thursday was 35.2mm at Otterbourne in Hampshire, with a wide range of 20-30mm across most southern counties of England.

Residents of flats in Shrewsbury are believed to have been trapped in their homes due to severe flooding.

One resident, James Hopkins, 45, who lives on Benbow Quay opposite the River Severn, told Sky News that “the flooding was terrible”.

“I have lived here for 18 months and this is the first time we have been cut off,” he added.

“I never expected it to spread to the foundations of the apartments, I was a bit shocked.
