As the monsoon hits parts of northern India, tourists are stranded in the hilly states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Rescue operations are underway in both the hill states and parts of Punjab and Haryana. About 2,000 tourists trapped in Himachal Pradesh’s Kasol have been evacuated. In Punjab, about 14,000 people have been moved to safer places from flooded localities in Patiala, Rupnagar, Moga, Ludhiana and others. The death toll rose to 21 in Punjab and Haryana, as six new deaths were reported on Wednesday. In Uttar Pradesh, 12 people died in the 24-hour period ending at 8pm on Wednesday. Water levels in Delhi’s Yamuna hit 208.65 mtr on Thursday. The Central Water Commission said water levels are likely to start falling from Friday.
